S04 coach Thomas Reis had to do without his captain Terodde (muscular problems) after the 1-1 draw against Wehen Wiesbaden; Polter started in his place in attack. Additionally, Murkin was given preference over Kozuki. The guests also had two new players on the pitch. Nollenberger and Condé started for the injured El Hankouri (torn muscle bundle) and Elfadli (strained ligament).

Magdeburg plays Schalke against the wall

Schalke started well, but a short interruption in the game due to pyrotechnic fog slowed them down a bit. After that, Magdeburg quickly set the tone. And after a mistake by Mohr, the quick-witted Gnaka made it 1-0 (16th).

A goal that really shocked the hosts for a short time. Nothing was going well at Schalke in this phase. Magdeburg went on the attack, Schuler was denied by Müller, who was substituted a little later due to injury, Gnaka did better in the aftermath of this scene and scored after Ceka’s lay-off to make it 2-0 (27′), which was well deserved at the time.

After the fans whistle: S04 turns up the heat before the break

The Saxony-Anhalt team then initially stayed in forward gear, which the Schalke supporters acknowledged with whistles. Reis reacted before the break and brought on Kabayadi for the weak Mohr, who immediately breathed life into the S04 offensive. Suddenly the Königbslauen created one chance after another. Polter scored the next goal (40th). The equalizer was also in the air, but Schalke was denied.

After the break, the game took a while to gain momentum. Little came from Magdeburg, Schalke came close to equalizing. Polter first stumbled upon a Kabayadi cross into the arms of Reimann (57′). Then Tempelmann successfully disrupted the opponent’s build-up of play and passed it across to Murkin, who welded the ball into the net to make it 2-2 (62′).

Wild exchange of blows at Schalke

The game now only knew one direction. But right in the middle of Schalke’s pressure phase, FCM hit again, benefiting from the fact that the Revierklub’s back line was unsorted. Ceka fed Krempicki, who had just been substituted, who gave Langer no chance to defend with his shot (67′).

The arena fell silent for the moment, but not for long. A direct free kick from Ouwejan made it 3-3 (69′), which Ouedraogo followed up with the next strike almost two minutes later. But his shot only hit the top edge of the crossbar (71′).

Polter hits from the point – Langer holds on to the win

Then there was a duel between Polter and Heber in the Magdeburg penalty area, with the FCM central defender clinging tightly to his opponent without a chance of the ball and causing him to fall. Referee Michael Bacher pointed to the spot and sent Heber off the pitch with a straight red. Polter didn’t need to be asked twice from eleven meters and made it 4:3 (79th).

That should also be the final result. The guests once again struggled to make offensive moves when they were outnumbered. But it only became really dangerous once. At literally the last second, Schalke’s substitute keeper Langer scratched a header off the line after a Magdeburg corner (90+8) – and thus held on to victory.

FC Schalke 04’s next top game is on Saturday evening (September 23rd, 8:30 p.m.) against FC St. Pauli. The Magdeburgers will meet SC Paderborn on Friday (September 22nd, 6:30 p.m.).
