Serge Gnabry will be absent from FC Bayern for several weeks. The offensive player broke his arm in the DFB Cup game in Münster. He is also out of the first international matches under Julian Nagelsmann. The thin staffing level could take its toll on the Munich team.

It happened very early in the game. Serge Gnabry tried to catch a through ball from Leon Goretzka and picked up the pace. Preußen Münster’s goalkeeper Johannes Schenk rushed towards the ball. Both players collided, Gnabry flew through the air and landed awkwardly on his arm. The 28-year-old immediately reported that he had been injured. A few minutes later, Thomas Tuchel took the FC Bayern Munich midfielder off the pitch. Gnabry watched the rest of the confident 4-0 win in the first round of the DFB Cup from the bench.

Late in the evening there was the sad certainty for the national player. Gnabry suffered a fracture of his left forearm in the fall. He will be absent from Bayern for several weeks and will also have to cancel the national team’s trip to the USA.

His latest status is that Gnabry should undergo surgery this Wednesday, said Tuchel. “Then it will take a few weeks,” said the Bayern coach: “It’s extremely bitter, especially for him personally, of course, but also for us. He’s just an important player.”

Bayern with a very tight squad

Bayern are plagued by injury concerns early in the season. Against Münster, Tuchel had to do without all three trained central defenders: Dayot Upamecano (adductor problems), Matthijs de Ligt (bruised left knee) and Kim Min-jae were injured. Instead, Leon Goretzka and Noussair Mazraoui played centrally at the back. Thomas Müller was also missing due to adductor problems.

The squad is very tight for the high demands of the championship, cup, international matches and Champions League. In the summer, some transfers that Tuchel had wanted could not be realized. “The squad is a bit thin, a bit small. We will do our best and push the squad. It’s a good squad, but a bit brave in some positions,” said Tuchel at the beginning of September.
