FC Bayern Munich Faces Defensive Crisis Ahead of DFB Cup Match

According to reports from Bild and Sport1, FC Bayern Munich will have to do without two central defenders. Matthijs de Ligt’s absence was already known, and now Kim Min-jae is also said to be unavailable. Particularly piquant: Dayot Upamecano could also not make it into the first eleven in the DFB Cup this evening.

De Ligt suffered a blow to his knee in the 7-0 win against VfL Bochum last Saturday. On Monday, Thomas Tuchel explained at the press conference that Upamecano and Kim were also ailing. “We have to see how Upa is doing. He has had a bit of latent discomfort since the international break,” said the Bayern coach: “We also have to clarify that with Min-jae.” The latter is said not to have flown to Münster.

Last summer, Tuchel pushed to sign another defender. Kyle Walker was among other things on the wish list. The Englishman could have played both on the right and inside after the departures of Josip Stanisic and Benjamin Pavard. Now Munich are in the cup against Preußen Münster with only one, or in the worst case even no, high-class central defender.

There is a promising talent on campus in Tarek Buchmann. However, the 18-year-old was recently sidelined with a muscle injury and was therefore probably not part of the professional training. Amateur defender Luca Denk (20) was part of the squad on Monday.

There is also speculation that Konrad Laimer or Joshua Kimmich could help out in central defense. Kimmich once played this temporarily under Pep Guardiola at Bayern. Kick-off in Münster is at 8:45 p.m. Click here for the live ticker.
