FC Bayern: Kimmich case – Hamann gets angry about the sanitary pad issue

As of: 7:15 p.m. | Reading time: 3 minutes

Bayern Munich coach Tuchel announced the substitution of national player Kimmich after the turbulent draw against Bayer Leverkusen. It was about risk avoidance. But the player apparently didn’t know anything about it himself. For expert Dietmar Hamann, this is absurd.

The confusion surrounding Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich continues to spread. At “Sky”, broadcaster expert Dietmar Hamann is literally talking himself into a rage. In the run-up to the broadcast of the Bundesliga games, he said on Saturday: “What kind of communication is that?! They have five physiotherapists and five trainers. And they aren’t in a position to tell their captain that it’s over after 60 minutes?!”

What happened? In the 2-2 draw against Leverkusen, Kimmich was substituted after 60 minutes. A strange situation arose. First Thomas Müller is replaced. The captain hands the armband to Kimmich and then leaves the pitch. Kimmich turns around and shortly afterwards realizes that he too is being replaced. Visibly surprised, he takes the bandage off again and passes it on to Leon Goretzka.

Kimmich trots off the field and exchanges a few words with Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel as he leaves. After that, Kimmich is well served. On the bench you can clearly see that the midfielder doesn’t agree with the substitution at all.

After the game, he was the first professional to leave the arena. When asked by BILD whether he would like to say something else and whether the lack of fitness after his muscular problems was the reason for the substitution, Kimmich said with a grin: “Ask the trainer.”

Hamann was bothered by the club’s treatment of the 28-year-old Kimmich. “If you have him in the team, you have two options: either you make him strong – or you sell him. But what Bayern are currently doing with Kimmich is not correct – including the coach.”

Tuchel had already announced before the game that Kimmich would not play through. During the international trip, the midfielder missed the Germany game against France due to muscular problems. The Bayern coach also explained after the final whistle that the club’s medical department had told him that Kimmich could only play for 60 minutes. Apparently only the player himself didn’t know about it.

Kimmich is also not allowed to take corners

“Of course, Josh always wants to stay on it. But 60 minutes was the doctor’s maximum. We stuck to that,” confirmed Tuchel. “It’s not the phase of the season in which we risk muscle injuries – especially not in midfield.” That’s why Kimmich didn’t take any corners this time to avoid putting additional strain on the affected areas.

Tuchel reported that the 28-year-old leading player’s role in the Bundesliga’s top game had been open for a long time. Ultimately, the decision was made after the warm-up, but then the medical department’s instructions were taken into account.

Tuchel obviously doesn’t want to risk anything in the English weeks. Next Wednesday, Bayern will continue in the Champions League with the opening game at home against Manchester United (9 p.m., in the WELT sports ticker).
