The Munich team starts on Friday with the home game against Syntainics MBC (8 p.m., live on BILDTV and on Dyn/Anzeige).
After four years in which Alba Berlin triumphed three times and most recently Ratiopharm Ulm triumphed sensationally, the BBL title should finally go back to the Isar.
But that’s not all. “Our goal is clearly the championship. We also want to defend the cup,” says Bayern’s basketball boss Marko Pesic (46) in a kicker interview.
And further: “We haven’t been champions for four seasons. There is no reason to act arrogant. But we should also have enough self-confidence because we believe our squad is strong.”
Not least thanks to the three world champions Andreas Obst (27), Isaac Bonga (23) and Niels Giffey (32). And star newcomer Ibaka (2019 champion with Toronto, most recently active for Milwaukee).
Pesic: “The goal was always to find someone who had quality and personality, who could pass on their experience – a manager. A month ago it was unthinkable that this would happen to Ibaka, but two weeks ago it was suddenly possible.”
The Bayern boss candidly said: “That’s why we took a bit of a risk and were also lucky that Ibaka had already played under Pablo Laso. Marketing considerations played no role at all. But I think that with a personality like Ibaka something like that comes along automatically.”
With the star ensemble plus top coach Pablo Laso (55), the championship should work again. Especially since the title competition from Alba (world champion Maodo Lô), Ulm (including Bruno Caboclo and Yago) and Telekom Baskets Bonn (the entire runner-up team) had to cope with the departure of numerous top performers.
