FC Augsburg Completes Deadline Day Double Signing: Tanganga and Mbabu Join the Squad

Doppelpack am Deadline Day

FC Augsburg hit the transfer market again shortly before the deadline. The Fuggerstadt have filled the open central defender position with Japhet Tanganga from Tottenham Hotspur. The 24-year-old is initially on loan for a year, and a purchase option has also been agreed with Spurs, which can become mandatory if certain parameters are met.

In the first talks, the Premier League club had called for a fee of £10m, the equivalent of €11.7m, for the right foot. According to reports, the purchase option is now at EUR 5.5 million. Should FCA move this coming summer, the London native would rank in the top 10 most expensive signings. Most recently, the transfer of the Swiss Gregory Wüthrich (Sturm Graz) burst.

Tanganga had already been linked with several Bundesliga clubs at the start of the transfer summer, including Bayer Leverkusen, Union Berlin and VfB Stuttgart. Hamburger SV is said to have put out feelers for the 1.84 meter defender, whose contract at White Hart Lane runs until 2025.

Tanganga had little playing time at Tottenham – FC Augsburg also brings Mbabu

At the time it was said that Tanganga preferred a move within the Premier League. The professional with Congolese roots is also said to have found a potential buyer in FC Torino, but a deal failed. He has made 50 competitive appearances for Tottenham since signing his first professional contract in 2020. Last season Tanganga had not played more than 146 minutes in four league games.

“Japhet is a very well trained and flexible defender who is characterized by his physique and strength in tackles. In Japhet, our side will have a player with experience at the highest level who will continue to develop at FCA. With his qualities, he will give our team more options on the defensive,” said FCA sporting director Marinko Jurendic.

According to consistent media reports, right-back Kevin Mbabu from FC Fulham should also come to Augsburg on loan. After “Sky“ had announced the forthcoming agreement the day before, wrote the “Kicker“ on Deadline Day that the deal was almost done. However, no purchase option was agreed for the former Wolfsburg resident. The 28-year-old Mbabu was active on loan for Servette FC in the second half of the 2022/23 season.

Update 7:04 p.m.: The Mbabu transfer was officially confirmed shortly after the completion of Tanganga’s personnel. “Kevin is a dynamic and athletically strong full-back whose qualities are also known from his time in the Bundesliga. I am delighted that Kevin is joining FCA and that his skills and experience will continue to strengthen our team both personally and in terms of sport,” said FCA sporting director Marinko Jurendic.
