Exploring the Historical Estates of Astaffort: A Journey through Time and Heritage

As part of the European Heritage Days, Astaffort Tourisme invited us to discover the Lajoannenque estate and more than a hundred people responded. As usual, Jean-François Grattieri told us, in great detail, about the life of this beautiful estate. From 1666 to 1916, the “castle” of Lajoannenque was the stronghold of the Lafitte family who made Astaffort their chosen land after making their fortune in Santo Domingo. Prosperous wine growers (at the forefront of the fight against phylloxera), the Lafittes also distinguished themselves in politics: three of them were mayor of Astaffort, two served as general councilor, one became a deputy… Without forgetting to say a few words, on Placide Louverture who married the Astaffortoise Joséphine de Lacaze and took up residence in Astaffort from 1821 until her death.

In period costumes

In Fals, at the castle, we were welcomed by a large part of Etienne de Bazon’s family. Throughout these two days, we were able to stroll through this magnificent park, which offers a beautiful view of the Gers valley and the Gascony hillsides. There was everything to have a good time, archery, old games very popular with children… At the end of the evening, a historic conference by Daniel Christiaens who gave us a wonderful moment of adventure live with this young gentleman who traveled the oceans, going from Africa to America to end up in Asia, before returning to Agen land after 5 years. Nearly 200 people came to discover this beautiful 18th century Gascon site.

Turn little mill

At the Cuq mill, more than 500 people lined up over the two days to be able to visit this magnificent mill, recently renovated and inaugurated at the end of July. It is true that this breathtaking 360° view is worth the detour. To this you add the significant investment of the municipality in the restoration of this beautiful heritage, yes we had to take advantage of these days to, once again, come and admire this beautiful building. And to top it off, the wind was there, the wings turned very regularly thanks to this good autan wind. Hats off once again for this great initiative, both material and human. A great adventure that brought many people closer together.
