Expanding Opportunities: Royal Bavarians Encourage Girls to Join Baseball and Softball Teams

Baseball for everyone – that’s how it works at the feet of Royal Bavarians. Tough girls who are also interested in this sport play in mixed youth teams. However, that could change. The only requirement: more girls start throwing, hitting and catching the hard, leather-covered balls on the “King’s Field”.

“The girls are currently playing in the three age groups of the youth teams,” reports coach and father of a baseball player, Christoph Horn. Softball teams, i.e. the variant of the game modified for girls and women, are not yet very numerous in Bavaria. However, a team from Munich-Haar recently showed interest in the young women from Füssen. “They noticed that we have good girls. That’s why the club asked if we would set up a syndicate with them,” said Horn.

The reason for this is not insignificant: Haar would like to provide a softball team in order to go to an open German championship in Karlsruhe in October. That’s how the stone got rolling. The syndicate with hair was discussed and at the same time the idea of having an all-Royal Bavarians girls team took shape. Nine young ladies are necessary to form your own team. A few more would be desirable to ensure lineup at competitions.

With Daniela Schälchli as a helping hand, Christoph Horn is in the best of hands. She has been playing baseball and softball since 1989, was even in the Bundesliga and coached one or the other girls’ team. She knows the differences between the classic and the women’s version very well: “Girls play on a smaller field and have slightly different rules. Their ball is a little bigger, but it’s just as hard as the boys’.”

Schälchli has only been living in Füssen for a year. She has now started training for “technical advice” and preparation for the championship. Children are very demanding in this sport. “Baseball is a mentally demanding sport,” says Schälchli. You also have to run, catch, throw and hit. All of this is of course part of the training.

Horn and Schälchli would be happy if even more girls developed fun with the American version of rounders and thus a softball team could be created. Training is every Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. It doesn’t matter how old the players are. “Just put on sportswear and come along. This also applies to boys,” adds Horn. “We never have too many players,” he says with a smile. A few times can be sniffed. Rental equipment is available to get you started. With a membership, the girls – and boys – can take part directly in competitions and other games.
