Exciting Start and Surprises at the III Yaiza Rallysprint: Rain, Fast Times, and Gearbox Issues

The start on Friday night of the III Yaiza Rallysprint could not have been more exciting, for different reasons on this occasion. First, as the organization explains this Saturday in a press release, due to the arrival of rain in this mountainous area of ”Los Ajaches”, which greatly affected the asphalt of the Las Breñas-Las Casitas timed section through Femés. Then the great time by Yeray Lemes-Aitor Cambeiro, which left the other Porsche 911s of Toñín Suárez-Jorge Cedrés and Oliver Rodríguez-David Rivero more than half a minute behind. The night of surprises did not end here, as the gearbox of Yeray’s car said enough and he stayed out of the rallysprint before the start of SS2 and after the blow he had just given to the classification.

With these premises, the one who ate the paella from the Chiringuito Tropical in the service area in Uga, would be none other than the team formed by the current island champions Suárez-Cedres, who took the scratch in the second pass in reverse direction and in the process they became the leaders of the night part, with 10.8 seconds ahead of Rodríguez-Rivero with another of the Porsche 911 GT3s. Third on the provisional podium was Alfredo Guerra-Lara Curbelo with Peugeot 208 Rally4, 20.9 from the head of the race. And excellent fourth place was the Honda Civic of Alexander Barros-Brenda Pérez.

The asphalt of the section was very delicate, especially on the first pass with the light rain that covered everything with water and the cars with dry tires. To give us an idea, Toñín dropped 42 seconds from his time on the first pass, 24 seconds in the case of Oliver.

Six teams had problems completing these two night stages, in addition to Lemes, Oscar Cabrera’s Citroen C3 Rally2 could not complete them either. And in the case of José Manuel León for leaving the road without consequences with the Citroen Saxo.

This Saturday the four remaining passes will be held starting at 9:30 am and as a novelty, the first two in the same direction and the last two in the other direction.

The day ended with the paellada in the work park for all the teams and the CD organizers. Evesport, courtesy of Chiringuito Tropical, with its owner Luis, a specialist in its preparation.
