Every day 6 thousand migrants arrive at the southern border and 8 thousand at the northern one, acknowledges Alicia Bárcena – El Sol de México

The chancellor, Alicia Bárcena, acknowledged that six thousand migrants are entering the country daily through the southern border of Chiapas, of which half come from the Darién Gap on the border between Colombia and Panama.

“We have a serious migration problem, three thousand migrants are arriving daily from the Darién Gap, adding to those coming from Central America, six thousand are arriving a day at the southern border and eight thousand at the border with United States, although 11,000 arrived yesterday,” said the person responsible for Mexico’s foreign policy during a press conference from New York where she is attending the 78th UN General Assembly.

Bárcena assured that the Mexican government is trying to apply a migration policy in line with respect for human rights, but accepted that “it is not an easy job” since the capacity of institutions such as the Mexican Commission for Aid to Refugees (COMAR) is exceeded to address the number of people who all resort to requesting refuge.

The chancellor even estimated that 140,000 migrants will arrive in the coming days at the northern border of Mexico with the intention of crossing into the United States.

Bárcena said that the majority of the migrants who are arriving in our country are Venezuelans, which is why they are already working with both the United States and the government of Nicolás Maduro to address the problem.

He considered that the decision of the government of the American Union to offer protection against deportation and give access to work permits to some 500 thousand Venezuelan migrants who are already in the United States illegally has encouraged the arrival of more people from that country. to Mexico who are trying to reach the American Union.

“In the case of Venezuela, one thing that worried us is the case in which it is accepting the presence of 500 thousand who will be offered jobs in the United States,” said Bárcenas.

He added that the relief of the sanctions that the White House maintains against the Maduro government may be an alternative for Venezuelans to stop leaving their country.
