Dominic Thiem Withdraws from Davis Cup Duel Against Portugal Due to Stomach Problems

Now it’s fixed! Dominic Thiem cannot help Austria in the Davis Cup duel against Portugal. The stomach continues to cause problems.

At the weekend (September 15th and 16th) Austria’s tennis men will play against Portugal in Schwechat. Bitter: Davis Cup captain Jürgen Melzer has to do without his top star. Dominic Thiem canceled his appearance late on Monday afternoon.

Thiem calls illness and leaves the future open

“Dominic has type C stomach inflammation, which is not without its effects,” explained manager and brother Moritz to ORF. “The good thing is, no bacteria like Heliocobacter were found.”

That morning, the tennis ace declared at a press conference that he had recently undergone an extensive health check in Salzburg. The final findings were still pending at this point. Now they are here – and led to the cancellation of the Davis Cup.

Thiem is now receiving medication that calms everything down and helps his stomach heal. “Unfortunately, this means that the match on Friday and Saturday will not be canceled. There is no point in sending him onto the field now after a ten-day break, especially for such an important encounter,” says Brother Moritz.

Fired by Thiem, now to Bresnik: “Best in the world”

Thiem has been suffering from stomach problems for several weeks and had to throw up several times during training. Because of the complaints, the 30-year-old had to give up in the second round of the US Open against Ben Shelton. “Things have gotten worse instead of better,” says the former number three in the world.

At the Davis Cup, Dennis Novak (ATP No. 192) will serve instead of Thiem. In addition, Melzer offers Sebastian Ofner as number one (ATP No. 58), neo-top 100 man Jurij Rodionov (100) and in doubles the duo Alexander Erler and Lucas Miedler (ATP 34/35).
