Dominic Thiem Reveals Illness and Uncertainty for Davis Cup

At the US Open, Dominic Thiem forced his body to give up. The 30-year-old, who had been 30 for a few days, had to vomit and had to deal with stomach cramps.

Thiem then went for treatment at the Red Bull Performance Diagnostics and Training Center in Salzburg. Now Thiem revealed what he is actually missing.

Thiem’s body was already “battered”

The tests in Salzburg revealed “quite a stomach infection,” which he has probably been carrying around since the summer.

He first had complaints in July in Gstaad – before his final in Kitzbühel. After the home tournament things got worse.

But he is already undergoing treatment and Thiem is receiving medication. “But things are getting better day by day,” he has positive news to announce.

Since then, “the problem with vomiting” has not occurred again. However, he is currently not training fully again.

Have you had a problem eating?

“Since the inflammation had been present for some time, the body was of course already a little weakened,” explains the former US Open winner. The Lower Austrian suspects that he caught the problem while eating.

He had problems with bacteria in his intestines when he was young, and he may now have a similar problem again. “All the traveling, the different food, we are a little more susceptible to it,” explains the tennis ace.

It cannot be said whether his current illness is related to this. However, this will be clarified as soon as he knows the findings from the gastroscopy.

Will Thiem play in the Davis Cup?

Thiem’s treatment will become more specific shortly. The 30-year-old received further findings on Monday afternoon. Then we will be able to say how we can treat it better.

“Then I believe that it can happen quickly and that it will be done again soon,” hopes Thiem. Because: “Basically, I’m fit. Once I get to the basic level, I’ll be able to do it again quickly,” he says.

He cannot yet say what all of this means for the Davis Cup, where Austria will meet Portugal from Friday. “That depends on what the findings reveal,” he explains. “Depending on how it turns out, I’ll see whether I play or not,” he explains.

“I have to look at my body too”

The international matches are “always important” to him, he emphasizes. “But I also have to look at my body. If it doesn’t work, it won’t work,” he points out.

But the man from Lichtenwörth promises: “Of course I will do everything I can to make sure I can play.”

If he can serve in the Davis Cup, this would of course be a further upgrade for Jürgen Melzer’s ÖTV team. So far, only Austria’s current number one, Sebastian Ofner, is firmly placed in the singles.
