BVB stumbled into the season and only drew against Heidenheim and Bochum. Dortmund has its first crisis early on. Coach, captain, purchasing policy – the reasons for the weak start to the season are complex.

Those responsible at BVB certainly imagined the start of the season differently. Borussia Dortmund took only five out of nine possible points from the first three games. Especially the games against Bochum and Heidenheim, against which BVB only drew, ensure a hot international break in Dortmund.

The team is far from their claim. Coaches and bosses are after three catastrophic performances, even the 1-0 win against Cologne was very happy, at a loss. Borussia has its first mini-crisis so early this season. Six spicy BVB questions about the current situation.

1. Doesn’t Captain Emre Can understand his role?

The national player seems overwhelmed in his six-man position and often falls between the central defenders. As a result, there is no play station in the headquarters, which should make the game fast. In addition, he often still plays too risky, preferring to do a poser action rather than playing in a straight line.

Coach Edin Terzic (40) does not like this approach at all. He wants Can to keep the role at headquarters. It is also important for in-game stability. No wonder the coach took him off early against Cologne (1-0).

2. What’s going on with Sebastien Haller?

Dortmund’s Sturm-Riese cannot yet build on the performance of the last back series and has not scored in all three league games. Very bitter: Against Heidenheim (2: 2) the 29-year-old even caused the penalty before equalizing. But there are also reasons why he cannot always perform at the highest level. His cancer is still in his bones.

It will still take time for him to completely shake it off. But it is also clear that the Ivorian is no longer undisputed as a center forward. With newcomer Niclas Füllkrug (30) there is open competition.

3. What is the Schlotterbeck incident doing to the team?

The argument between Nico Schlotterbeck (24) and coach Terzic after the Cologne game, defender and coach fought a heated battle of words in the cabin aisle, does not exactly turn the mood into a positive one. Dortmund’s coach must now ensure that other dissatisfied players (Reus, Özcan) do not seek confrontation. One thing is certain: If BVB continues to play miserable football, Terzic no longer has any arguments to hold on to the regular players.

4. Does Terzic have too much power?

At least the last transfer period has shown that he often gets his wishes through. Instead of getting Alvarez from Amsterdam, he would rather keep Can and even extend his contract. Füllkrug was also a Terzic transfer in part, preferring to have a striker rather than a centre-back.

When it came to the filling jug, everyone agreed. Nevertheless, the BVB management team should be able to speak the same language again, otherwise it threatens to explode.

5. Was it a mistake not to bring in another centre-back?

There could at least be a tense situation in the defense headquarters. The fact that BVB only relies on Hummels, Süle and Schlotterbeck could be risky given the large number of games. National player Bella-Kotchap was a prime candidate but ended up leaving Southampton on loan for PSV Eindhoven for €2m. A transfer that would certainly have been manageable.

6. Is the squad too bad?

no! Of course, the Bellingham departure for 100 million euros (plus 30 million euros of possible bonus payments) to Real Madrid weighs heavily. But that alone shouldn’t be an excuse. With Nmecha and Sabitzer, two national players were brought in for the headquarters instead.

Both have the potential to replace the Englishman. Bensebaini and Füllkrug are also established stars. Even if no mega-transfer à la Kane went into the pot, the squad is no worse than in the almost-title year.
