DFB does not exclude foreign national coaches

In the future, the German national team could be coached by a foreign national coach for the first time – there are already prominent advocates for Louis van Gaal. Meanwhile, Leroy Sané would be happy to see Julian Nagelsmann again.

“We’re not ruling out any option at the moment, whether it’s a German or foreign coach. We’re not slamming any doors. We expressly allow this option,” said DFB President Bernd Neuendorf on ARD.

Neuendorf was specifically asked about candidate Louis van Gaal. The 72-year-old, like several other coaches, is being discussed as a possible successor to Hansi Flick, who was released on Sunday, and had quietly expressed concerns because of the history of the eleven German national coaches to date.

However, there was contact with the supposed dream solution Jürgen Klopp, as Neuendorf revealed. “But it certainly wasn’t a serious negotiation.” Klopp once again declined with reference to his contract with Liverpool FC until 2026.

Before the international match against France in Dortmund, Neuendorf also drafted the profile of the desired coach. “We need a person who is assertive, who is resilient because: That’s stressful! We still have nine months until the European Championships, everyone knows the expectations of the fans and the association. We don’t have much time.”

The DFB boss also made it clear that he, his deputy Hans-Joachim Watzke and sports director Rudi Völler were looking for the Flick heir. “The three of us conduct the discussions and the process.” The task force founded after the World Cup disaster in Qatar was not involved.

Neuendorf does not see the task as a suicide mission. “I wouldn’t paint it black, I wouldn’t say: ‘We’re down!'” There is “a lot of potential” in the DFB selection.

DFB team: Leroy Sané would be happy to see Nagelsmann again

Goalscorer Leroy Sané was asked about a possible national coach Julian Nagelsmann after the 2-1 win against France. “Julian is definitely a good coach and also a good person,” he emphasized. “Let’s see what happens and whether he’s up for it. Of course it would be nice to see him again and work with him.” Bayern fired Nagelsmann in the spring and replaced him with Thomas Tuchel.

The upcoming national coach “doesn’t have much to lose,” joked Sané, but then immediately became serious again: “We have a big task ahead of us with the home European Championship. We have to go from international match to international match.”

DFB team: Philipp Lahm raves about van Gaal

“As a coach, Louis van Gaal stands for discipline, order and structure in the way his teams play. He always conveys this through a very clear speech,” Philipp Lahm told the Bild newspaper.

The 2014 world champion has already worked with the Dutchman at German record champions Bayern Munich. “At FC Bayern it was the right man who shaped the club at the right time with his game idea,” praised Lahm. The 72-year-old is “a very strong personality with a lot of experience, which he has gained in top international football as a club and national coach.”

However, Van Gaal himself does not believe that he has much chance of succeeding Hansi Flick. “I feel honored to be named as one of the candidates. But no foreigner has ever been chosen for the position of national coach in Germany,” he told Sky.
