Dennis Schröder Leads Germany to Basketball World Championship Victory

Germany becomes basketball world champion for the first time and everyone agrees that this triumph is mainly due to team captain Dennis Schröder. What you need to know about the basketball star.

Germany is becoming a basketball nation: While the German national soccer teams have recently caused frustrating fan experiences, the German basketball players are making Germany’s hearts beat faster again with their spectacular World Cup victory. The undisputed hero of the furious final in Manila is Dennis Schröder (29), who led the German team onto the pitch as captain.

With the victory of the German basketball players, the voices that had previously criticized Schröder because of his sometimes perceived provocative and ostentatious manner and denied him his sporting maturity are now quieter. He is now celebrated in the headlines as a virtuoso conductor and undisputed leader of the German basketball heroes.

Basketball star Dennis Schröder: “We want our respect”

It became clear in his emotional statement about the World Cup victory that the general praise was pouring down on the athlete like oil. He told the broadcaster “n-tv” after the game: “We want our respect. And I want my respect. We have achieved something that no one else has achieved. This hating and badmouthing has always motivated me. Whoever has always supported me “I kiss his heart. The rest can stay away.”

Looking back on his career, which has now spanned ten years, he added: “It’s been a long journey. Last year we won bronze, we wanted to build on that. We have an incredible team. Everyone knows their role, our coach set us up perfectly. 8- Going 0 against these opponents is incredible. Winning gold is a blessing. Being able to share it all with my teammates and family is beyond words.”

Dennis Schröder: family man and basketball star

Together with his family, Dennis Schröder created the most beautiful party pictures on the court after the World Cup victory. With a big grin on his face and the winner’s trophy at his feet, Schröder posed next to his wife Ellen Ziolo (31) and their three children for the photographers.

Schröder also made it clear on his Instagram channel that his success is always a family matter for him. There he commented: “Becoming world champion and having my family with me to support me in every single game is priceless. Ps: The game was for my mom Agi Fatou Schröder for her birthday! 9/10/65!!! I love you.”

Jump from Braunschweig to the NBA

Schröder is considered a sporting high-flyer. The Braunschweig native’s basketball talent was discovered at the age of eleven and he celebrated his first successes in the Junior Basketball Bundesliga (NBBL). In 2010 he was promoted to the first division reserve team SUM Baskets Braunschweig and then played for the Basketball Löwen Braunschweig (previously “New Yorker Phantoms Braunschweig”) until 2013.

In April 2013 he made the jump to the American National Basketball Association (NBA), where he initially joined the Atlanta Hawks. He then played in the NBA for Oklahoma, the LA Lakers, Boston and Houston. During the 2023 summer break, Schröder moved to the Toronto Raptors, the only Canadian basketball team in the NBA. He reportedly received a two-year contract there with a total salary of $26 million.
