Cuban Athletes Eye Gold and Bronze Medals at Continental and Oceania Championships

Cuba will seek two gold and three bronze medals at the closing of the individual tournament of the Continental and Oceania Championships in Calgary, Canada, with highlights for Idalis Ortiz and Andy Granda, who will fight in the finals of the +78 and +100 kilograms ( kg), respectively.

The Confederation’s Information Panel announced via WhatsApp that Ortiz and Granda will face the Brazilians Beatriz Souza and Rafael Silva for the titles of their respective divisions, in that order.

For the bronze metals, Omar Cruz (+100 kg) will take to the tatami against the Canadian Marc Deschene; Idelannis Gómez (70 kg), before also host Luana Carvalho; and Lianet Cardona (78 kg), against the Australian María Swan.

Maikel Mkencie (81 kg), Iván Silva (90kg) and Liester Cardona (100kg) finished without medals this Saturday.

Mkencie and Cardona lost in their first fights and Silva did not appear in the competition due to health problems, Andrés Taño, general secretary of the National Federation, reported via WhatsApp from the headquarters to the Cuban News Agency (ACN).

Regarding Silva, Taño added that we must take care of him ahead of the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago de Chile, a multi-sport event that will take place in October-November.
