The Lubbock Coronado football team opened up District 2-5A Division I play with a 21-7 win against Caprock on Thursday night at Dick Bivins Stadium.

It was a defensive struggle throughout the game as the two teams combined for as many first half punts (seven) as points scored. Coronado backup quarterback Dom Parrish, who stepped in on the second drive following an injury to Isaiah Vazquez, found Surreal Garrett for a 17-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter and that’s all the scoring either side mustered in the opening half.

Zayden Ramirez tied the game for Caprock (1-4, 0-1) with a seven-yard touchdown plunge in the third, but Parrish scored from three yards out in the fourth to make it 14-7. Caprock attempted to go for it with less than six minutes remaining in their own territory and couldn’t convert. That set up a 32-yard scoring strike from Parrish to Garrett with 5:28 left to wrap it up.

Caprock nearly came back within seven late.

“These guys don’t quit,” Caprock head coach Rowdy Freeman said. “They play hard from the opening whistle to the final whistle and it’s all because of the senior leadership we have. … We’re going to get it right. They still believe in the message we’re sharing and they know we have to play for one another at this point. We did some good things tonight, we just didn’t do enough of them.”

The Longhorn defense did its part in holding the Mustangs (2-3, 1-0) to 220 total yards, including 101 rushing yards on 28 carries. Credit Parrish for doing an admirable job of filling in on the second drive of the game and stepping up.

“We just talked about battling through adversity,” Coronado head coach DJ Mann said. “We talked about doing things right, what’s important right now and I’m super proud of the kids and the way they performed after losing our quarterback.”

Caprock will take on Amarillo High next week at Dick Bivins Stadium at 7 p.m. on Friday.
