Coach Christian Held Discusses the Rostock Seawolves’ Season Preparation and Challenges

The Rostock Seawolves BBL basketball players will start the season in two weeks. Coach Christian Held (35) in a BILD interview.

BILD: What’s okay and what’s not?

Christian Held: “The team is trying to implement the things we have been working on. Offensive: Finding the passes and the advantage that the defense provides. Defensive: Making adjustments quickly when something isn’t working the way we think it should. In some phases we lost focus, we will work on that.”

A tough start for the Rostock Seawolves

How big is the difference to the previous season preparation because the “surprise team” factor is no longer there?

That’s definitely a point. Things are no longer made so easy for us that an opponent might think ‘We’ll go to Rostock and take the win’. We have to find new ways to win games. What’s also different: We have three do-or-die games in the first two weeks of the season (cup, European Cup qualification, editor’s note), and four games in seven days in the second week. That requires a completely different preparation.”

Were the top departures Mawugbe and Lewis adequately replaced?

I’ll take my time with the assessment. On the other hand, it is not the idea to replace someone 1:1. We are a different team, we consciously chose different types of players. Now we want to play a different kind of Seawolves basketball, with the strengths we now have as a team.

Is it an advantage that only one player, Matt Bradley, came directly from the USA – the others already have European experience?

Yes, you also notice that in training, we have more understanding of the ‘European style of play’ and more experience. Unfortunately, to counterbalance this, we have a lot of changes because we had to let a lot of players go. Last season we took eight players with us to the BBL, which meant a high level of continuity; we were able to assume more things and no longer had to work them out. Now we really started almost from scratch and rebuilt everything.

On Thursday evening the Seawolves lost a test in Chemnitz 85:94. On Friday they will be opponents in the Towers’ season opener in Hamburg.
