closes the year with a loss of 200 million

Barcelona Barça has sent a note to the media with the data relating to the financial closure of the 2022-2023 season and the 2023-2024 budget. The entity’s forecast is to end the current year with 11 million euros in profit before taxes, the result of a drastic cut in expenses and a considerable effort in terms of income. Joan Laporta’s board of directors has approved electronically this week, shortly before the limit set by the statutes (September 30), that it expects to receive 859 million euros this year and spend 848 million.

The income item is frankly optimistic, since it does not foresee any sale of assets and takes into account both 25% less money in television rights (a product of the leverage of Sixth Street that has made it possible to square the last two balance sheets) and the exile in Montjuïc, which means less money in ticketing and season tickets than a normal activity campaign at Camp Nou. From the club they hope to stop the blow with more commercial income and a trajectory in the men’s Champions League more profitable than that of the last two years. In terms of spending, Barça is projecting a 27% reduction compared to last year, mainly thanks to the significant cut in wages for the first team that Mateu Alemany brought together before stepping down as director of football.

With regard to the end of the 22-23 academic year, Barça has announced a net profit of 304 million euros as a result of 1,259 in income and 1,165 (100 more than budgeted) in expenses. The amount is better than what was foreseen in the budget that the commissioners approved in the last assembly (274 million), a fact celebrated in the offices of Arístides Maillol because the premature elimination in the Champions League forced to close more trade deals that would plug the hole in the middle of the season. In total, 20 new sponsors have been signed.

“The club has improved in all lines of business, and in each of these it has recorded figures higher than those planned”, congratulates the club in its statement, in which it specifies that it sold more than one million tickets for the first time in its history to help generate 229 million for the operation of its facilities, 8% more than what was recorded in the last pre-covid season. It also celebrates the 351 million between sponsorships and merchandising, a historical record that is 43% more than the previous year, and a reduction in the entity’s net debt (from 680 million to 552).

200 million operating losses

However, the final profit of the financial year 22-23 (304 million) is hit for the effect of the sale of 15% of the audiovisual rights to Sixth Street, an operation that reflects 400 million in the income of the last campaign, and the sale of Barça Studios (197 million of financial income that has not been fully collected ). Without this money, the balance is negative and has almost 200 million operating losses. This hole in the ordinary activity of the club is the main reason why the fair play The League’s financial budget continues to be exceeded. In fact, the Spanish employers do not have all of them that Barça balance the balance sheet this year if it does not make any extraordinary operation (major sale of sports assets, the lever of BLM, etc.).

While waiting to know in more detail the numbers audited by the consultancy firm Grant Thornton, Barça will start looking in the coming weeks for the favorable vote of the limited partner in the assembly that will be held on October 22, hours before a match in Montjuïc against Athletic. An ordinary session that the organization does not yet know where it will be physically held, but everything points to it continuing to be in telematic format to reduce costs. The only thing 100% certain is that Barça TV will not broadcast it.
