Christian Streich Expresses Sympathy for Dismissal of Hansi Flick and Discusses Potential Replacements for National Coach

Christian Streich (58) was not indifferent to the dismissal of former national coach Hansi Flick (58)!

“It’s a shame that it happened like this. Nobody would have wished that for him. He is an exceptional coach. You feel sorry for that because he doesn’t deserve it,” explains the SC Freiburg coach at the press conference before the Bundesliga game against Borussia Dortmund (Saturday, 3:30 p.m.).

And adds: “It was difficult for Hansi. Just the events in Qatar. A lot of things were extremely political and not everything could be influenced by him.”

While the nation celebrated the national team’s strong performance (2-1 win) against France on Tuesday evening, Streich also thought of his coaching colleague there and revealed: “It’s great that the national team won against France. But it’s really hard for a coach when you’ve done everything and then in the first game without you the luck suddenly returns. That is not easy.”

Streich, however, has even greater respect for his long-time acquaintance Rudi Völler (63). He can fully understand his decision to make the office available again immediately after one game. The Freiburg coach: “It is completely understandable that Rudi only wanted to play one game and that should be respected without further ado. I can imagine it wasn’t easy for him. Rudi has a big heart, and for him too this victory probably has a bitter aftertaste because of Hansi. Of course it’s all the better that he stepped in and it was successful.”

Streich does not have a preferred candidate to succeed Flick. Streich, however, has a clear opinion on the DFB’s practice of only hiring coaches from Germany: “It’s not the case that we only need someone from abroad to bring in innovations. It should simply be about finding the best coach, but in my opinion the passport doesn’t matter.”

So Louis van Gaal (72) as national coach? Or Julian Nagelsmann (36)? Streich: “There are quite a few suitable trainers. Like everyone else in the country, I’m watching closely and, like everyone else, I’m excited to see who it will be.”
