Bad news for the Spanish Davis Cup team: top player Carlos Alcaraz has canceled his participation in the group stage next weekend.

In Valencia, Spain faces Serbia, the Czech Republic and South Korea. The top two teams in each group qualify for the final round of the last eight in Malaga in November.

Alcaraz, who wants to take a break after his semi-final defeat against Daniil Medvedev at the US Open, will be replaced in Valencia by Albert Ramos. The 36-year-old initially left it open whether Novak Djokovic would play for Serbia in Valencia after his final appearance in New York as announced. (sid/jod)
