“It’s an incredible year, we’ve experienced so much adversity and even in the last days, we felt the title slipping through our fingers… Now, we have the feeling of duty accomplished,” commented manager Patrick Scalabrini, bottle of champagne in hand.

There was an explosion of joy within this united group after winning the fifth and final game of the final against the Evansville Otters by a score of 12 to 3. At the end of this evening at the legendary Bosse Field in Evansville, Scalabrini’s troupe obtained a second title in as many years in this independent circuit. This is also a ninth championship in the history of the Capitals since their creation in 1999.

“I don’t like to compare championships,” added Scalabrini. Last year, it was our first in the Frontier League, and this year, it’s adversity… We came so close to not making the playoffs, I feel like we did stole a little. »

A happy decision

After winning the first two games of the final in Quebec, each time on winning circuits at the bottom of the ninth inning, the Capitales suffered two defeats in as many days, in Evansville.

Helping welcome the Magic to Indiana, it was Scalabrini who himself provided a helping hand in juggling his offensive formation. Tommy Seidl and David Glaude each hit the long ball. In addition to Glaude, another Quebecer contributed, Jonathan Lacroix, with a two-run double at the start of the third inning.

“It was a match without tomorrow and we felt in the locker room before the match that we were not going to lose,” commented Lacroix. Everyone came together, everyone came together to win. »

On the mound, Adbiel Saldana had eight strikeouts in five innings of work while allowing just three runs, two of which were earned. Relievers Franklin Parra, Austin Marozas and Frank Moscatiello completed the work on the mound for the Capitals. He allowed a first hit after an out in the fourth inning when Quebec was already leading 6 to 0. The Otters then scored two runs during this turn at bat.

Ruben Castro, MVP

This championship for the Quebec club seemed written in the sky after the two spectacular victories signed at Stade Canac, during which Justin Gideon and Juremi Profar played the heroes. Ruben Castro also received the title of MVP at the end of this final.

The 2023 season will have been significant for the Capitals. After winning just two of their first nine games of the campaign, they finished with a 60-35 regular season record.

The Quebec team notably benefited from Castro’s return in June. The Capitals then experienced a streak of 14 victories between July 5 and 25, a record. Injuries to Marc-Antoine Lebreux and Kyle Crowl led to the arrival of Greg Bird and Jesmuel Valentin, two former major league baseball players, towards the end of the season and for the playoffs.

IN THE NOTEBOOK

The players Greg Bird et Tommy Seidl went to church Sunday morning in Evansville. They had undoubtedly prayed for a victory for the Capitals in the evening. There was no question for the Capitals to complain about playing the final game of the final on the road when they had a better regular season record than the Evansville Otters. “For me, this formula is the right one”, decided Michel Laplante, president of the Capitals, about the system of alternation between the East and West sections for home advantage in the final. Panamanian pitchers Steven Fuentes and Abdiel Saldana leave Evansville directly to return to their native country at the end of this final against the Otters. Saldana was the Capitals’ starter for Sunday night’s final game. Voted Reliever of the Year in the Frontier Baseball League, Frank Moscatiello interests the Kansas City Royals organization. He should therefore participate in a trial camp in the coming days. It is already possible to confirm that the pitching coach Cody Clark will not be back with the Capitals next season. Let’s say that his relationship with manager Patrick Scalabrini is not good. Favorite from these few days spent in the entourage of the Capitals, in Evansville: sir Raymond Boisverttranslator and head of international relations.
