Borussia Dortmund has announced its squad for the 2023/24 Champions League. This has now been published on the UEFA homepage. Several professionals are missing – for different reasons.

Squad for the Champions League: BVB is without Meunier and Morey

The injured full-backs were not reported for the premier class Matthew Morey and Thomas Meunier. In Antonios Papadopoulos Coach Edin Terzic is also waiving a third defender Ole Pohlmann is not in the lineup. Surprising at first glance: Jamie Bynoe-Gittens missing from the A-list. There is a simple reason for this: he meets the requirements to be registered via the B list, which is only submitted to UEFA by midnight the day before a Champions League game.

“A player may be registered on List B if he was born on or after 1 January 2001 and if he has been eligible to play for the club concerned for at least two consecutive years since his 15th birthday; or for three years in a row – with a maximum one-year loan – for a club in the same association. 16-year-old players may be registered if they have been under contract with the club in question for the last two years without interruption,” says UEFA.

While a maximum of 25 players – including at least two goalkeepers and a total of eight “local players” – can be registered on the A list, Borussia Dortmund can enter an unlimited number of players on the B list during the Champions League season. This means that BVB coach Edin Terzic can nominate additional youngsters for the matchday squad for each individual matchday.

„Local Player“

Eight of the 25 A-list places are exclusive to “locally trained players” reserved. If a team nominates fewer than eight ‘home-grown’ players, the number of players on List A will be reduced accordingly.

What is a “locally trained player”?

Club-trained players who have been under contract with that club for at least three years between the ages of 15 and 21. National association-trained players who have been under contract with another club in the same association for at least three years between the ages of 15 and 21 have. No club may enter more than four association-trained players for the list of eight ‘local’ players.

Should Borussia Dortmund move into the knockout phase of the Champions League, BVB can make further changes to the squad. Before the round of 16, the clubs can nominate a maximum of three new players until February 2nd. Important: Unlike a few years ago, they may have previously played for another club in the Champions League, the Europa League or the Europa Conference League.

This is the BVB squad for the group stage of the Champions League:

Tor: Kobel, Meyer, Ostrzinski, Lotka

Defense: Schlotterbeck, Bensebaini, Hummels, Can, Süle, Ryerson

Midfield: Özcan, Reyna, Nmecha, Reus, Duranville, Wolf, Brandt, Sabitzer

Sturm: Haller, Füllkrug, Moukoko, Malen, Adeyemi

B-list players: Semic, Blank, Bueno, Kamara, Bynoe-Gittens, Bamba
