Borna Gojo: Revolutionizing Tennis for a More Electric and Entertaining Sport

In tennis and in life, there are always drivers for change. People who advocate breaking with what is established, for giving a 180 degree turn to what is supposed to be done. One of them is Croatian, he steps into the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time and is very hungry. His name was Borna Gojo.

Despite being Croatian, much of the growth of Born Joy as a tennis player he was far from the Balkan country. Not only that: closer than it seems to the grounds of the US Open 2023, where he now shines and is looking hard to reach his first second week of Grand Slam. distinguished member of the wake forest university, there Gojo learned to make tennis something more than a fight of equals, but a show in which the role of your teammates and the public ends up being a vital part of the result. And, perhaps, his experiences in college make him have a vision of this sport very different from that of many purists. Practically a revolutionary, Borna spoke at length at a press conference about what changes he would make to make tennis more electric, entertaining, beautiful, in statements brought to us by his colleagues from the Tennis Majors.

a different environment

“I don’t mind the noise. I’ve played college tennis, so for me, the crazier it is, the better. I’m used to it. I like it when the atmosphere turns to tennis, because tennis is an extremely boring sport. As a spectator you have to keep quiet… I would change that. Look at other sports: I go to see Hajduk (Split, your city’s football team) and it turns out that I have to keep quiet? Please! I have never had any incidents with fans, but at university there were a lot of hot moments, people threw things at us once, one of my classmates wanted to fight once, the police prevented it from escalating.

I feel like tennis is a dying product, that we need more of it. I would change all the rules! First of all, I would like the ball boys to bring us our towels, because I have to walk all the time. I would love for the players to be able to do some light shouldering or trash talk to be allowed, for there to be a little bit of provocation. There is no fighting, but I would like to be able to say something to my opponent. The way things are now, if I say anything they call the police immediately, everything is very rigid. Also, I would like viewers to be able to walk and talk. Some players have a problem with someone moving on the 77th row of the big stadiums. On the outer courts everyone is moving, so what? I would let people come and go whenever they wanted, they wouldn’t have to wait for both games. I know what that is. Lastly, I see no reason why people can’t cheer during points. Ok, maybe it bothers you at some point, so what?

About insults and swearing

“What you journalists do is sometimes ridiculous. Let’s make a story about everything that has been said in a football or basketball game. What nonsense is that? Of course I will swear again. People say that I don’t know how to behave Well, those people should go to the track, do something, get off the couch, do some sport, play Wimbledon… and we can talk there in case they don’t swear. I can only laugh at things like that: is it news, for example, that Luka Modric swears?

Athletes, celebrations and being an example

“Do athletes have to be robots? To me, it’s stupid to try to be someone I’m not. I’m not better or smarter than the average man, I’m just trying to do my job to the best of my ability. Why should anyone care? if after that I go and have a couple of drinks? The problem is that nowadays people record you constantly. For example, if I were in the position of Nikola Jokic, I would end up in the newspapers three times a day”.

The example of the Big Three

“I give them a lot of credit for what they have done in their careers. Nole, Federer, Nadal…everyone has their own lifestyle. Djokovic can’t party after every tournament he wins: he has won so much that he I would become an alcoholic. Everyone has their own way, I am not one to judge, we do what we believe, feel and consider to be the best for us”.
