The Allies took the first Red Baron out of the sky in the First World War. The second one will no longer be released into the air. Boris Becker didn’t shoot his opponents – boom-bum – on the battlefield. He still has to comment on the US Open from his sofa at home. A gloss.
On April 21, 1918, Manfred von Richthofen was shot down. The officer was a fighter pilot in the First World War, and his marksmanship gave him legendary status. “Our flying king, Captain Baron von Richthofen, has not returned from his last combat flight. You all know, although he was only a quarter of a century old, he had become a national hero, a role model for his troops, an example of what a capable man can achieve in the field,” Reichstag Vice President Hermann Paasche read to the people’s assembly on Richthofen’s death, called the “Red Baron”.
70 years later, German history would produce a second one: Boris Becker. He was already a national hero at 17 and fortunately only shot down his opponents – boom-bum – in the service instead of on the battlefield. But he also led a life on the plane.
