Serbia’s game at the Basketball World Cup against South Sudan has long been decided when a momentous scene occurs. Borisa Simanic is badly fouled. A few days later, a kidney had to be removed.

The last game of the preliminary round was decided long ago. Serbia led 106-78 against South Sudan with two minutes to play last Wednesday at the Basketball World Cup when Nuni Omot beat his opponent Borisa Simanic under the basket and scored for South Sudan. During the action, Omot deliberately rammed his elbow into the Serb’s kidney area with full force. Simanic went down and couldn’t continue playing.

Simanic was first treated indoors and then taken to a hospital in the Philippine capital, Manila. The injury was worse than expected, and the 25-year-old underwent surgery the night after the game. There were complications during the operation.
