34-year-old Axel Witsel is considering a possible return to Standard, the club with which he has won two national titles. That’s what Het Laatste Nieuws writes.
Although he had previously rejected a return, he now hints that the idea is in the back of his mind. Witsel currently plays for Atlético Madrid, where he still has a year left on his contract, so his future is uncertain. Standard is open to a reunion and will consider his file if he becomes a free agent next season.
Witsel, an icon of the club, has always maintained a good relationship with Standard and also dreams of a coaching career, possibly in Liège. The club has a tradition of bringing back former players, such as Zinho Vanheusden and Moussa Djenepo this summer.
