Argentina Starts 2026 World Cup Qualifying with a Win

Argentina starts with World Cup qualifying win

Vice world champion France is still in a hurry on the way to the European Championships in Germany. The French defeated Ireland 2-0 (1-0) to claim their fifth win in their fifth group match in qualifying for next year’s tournament. The Dutch are also on course for the European Championship after a comfortable 3-0 (3-0) win against Greece. Hungary also took a big step towards EURO 2024 with an important 2-1 (2-1) win in Serbia.

France has as good as bought its ticket. In the Prinzenpark in Paris, coach Didier Deschamps’ team performed superiorly and created chances early on. With preliminary work from captain Kylian Mbappé, Aurélien Tchouaméni (19th minute) used one of the first with a wonderful flick to take the lead. Substitute ex-Gladbach player Marcus Thuram (48th) followed up shortly after the break – it was his debut goal for Les Bleus. Next Tuesday, the French will meet Germany in a friendly in Dortmund.

The victory of the Dutch was never in danger either. Marten de Roon (17th), Cody Gakpo (31st) and Hoffenheim professional Wout Weghorst (39th) scored the goals for coach Ronald Koeman’s team. Hungary also has the best chance of getting a ticket to the European Championship. TSG newcomer Attila Szalai (10th) initially put hosts Serbia in the lead with an own goal. But then Barnabás Varga (34′) and RB Leipzig’s Willi Orbán (36′) turned the game around for the Hungarians, who lead Group G ahead of the Serbs.
