Amon-Ra St. Brown is heading into his third NFL season and wants more. Right at the start, the German-American wide receiver can prove himself among the best in the opening game. His goals for this season could hardly be more ambitious.

Amon-Ra St. Brown maintains his notebook. And he uses it every day. Before each training session with the Detroit Lions, the football pro reads himself a list of 16 names three times, these are all wide receivers who were selected before him in the NFL draft two years ago. St. Brown was only number 112 overall back then, and that still gnaws at him. “I will never forget that,” says St. Brown, the disappointing day with the almost endless waiting for his call has left its mark. But it also drives him that the 32 teams didn’t have him high on their lists for the distribution of the most promising talents. The 23-year-old wants to prove something, he doesn’t really have to anymore.

The German-American, whose mother Miriam comes from Leverkusen, caught 196 passes in his first two NFL seasons. More than any of the 16 receivers in his booklet, which in Ja’Marr Chase even includes the fifth draft pick from ’21. Only two players before St. Brown in the US professional league have ever reached this number: the two stars Justin Jefferson and Michael Thomas, today record holders with 149 catches in one season (2018/19).

St. Brown didn’t just list names. His personal goals are also in it in black and white, and he knows exactly what he wants. However, the pro-bowler does not allow a look into his book. “I’ll keep that to myself,” said St. Brown, “I won’t tell anyone until the season is over.”

First the champion, then the Super Bowl

In principle, it is not difficult to make assumptions about the content. In each of his first two NFL seasons, St. Brown has had six touchdowns, and he’s looking to add something here, just like he did in gaining ground. It was 912 yards in 2021/22, already 1161 yards in 2022/23. In catches he went from 90 to 106. In all three categories he will want more, he has to want more. And he’s really into it. “People know me now. The defense now know that the ball should come to me,” he says. “I want to be a player who will never be forgotten.”

Things start off with a bang for Amon-Ra St. Brown, the youngest of three brothers – the 26-year-old Equanimeous plays for the Chicago Bears. In the opening game on Friday (2:20 a.m. CEST/RTL and in the live ticker on ntv.de), Detroit is a guest of Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs and quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

“It’s going to be super fun. We stopped strong, beating Green Bay in Green Bay,” says St. Brown, confident. The team wants to “take the momentum with them. I’m excited, can’t wait.” General manager Brad Holmes strengthened the Lions, who missed the playoffs for the sixth time in a row last season, well in the summer. “You found me in the fourth round (of the draft, ed.). You know how to get talent.”

The passport recipient has big plans, really a lot. Amon-Ra St. Brown is aiming for the big hit. “We want to win the Super Bowl,” he says. Let The Games Begin.
