Alexander Zverev is actually always looking forward to Grigor Dimitrov

Alexander Zverev explained in his obligatory press conference that it would have been the best two sets of the entire year that he played at the Louis Armstrong Stadium in the third round of the 2023 US Open a few weeks ago. He could have lost both of these sets (but in reality he could have won both), in any case the fans could look forward to a really fine evening of tennis – if Grigor Dimitrov hadn’t died like the proverbial primrose afterwards.

Something that happens to the Bulgarian more often against Alexander Zverev, against whom Dimitrov lost the last six games. Zverev only had to give in in Basel 2014, but at that time the Hamburg native was just getting used to the level of professional men’s tennis.

But if a meeting with Grigor Dimitrov is coming up, then Zverev will show him the respect he deserves. And then still insults him according to all the rules of tennis. Sometimes in three solid sets like in Roland Garros this spring, sometimes in a hurry like in Cincinnati shortly before the US Open.

Dimitrov asks Zverev other questions

And today in the semi-finals in Chengdu? Admittedly: Alexander Zverev, who started as the tournament favorite, has allowed quite a lot in his two matches so far. He had to go into the third set against Pavel Kotov as well as against Miomir Kecmanovic. The latter even made legitimate claims to the upset in the second sentence. Zverev resisted again.

As is well known, Grigor Dimitrov asks completely different playful questions than Kecmanovic – but Alexander Zverev actually always has the right answers. The continuous slice with the backhand? Bring it on! Even with the serve, Dimitrov can’t actually endanger Zverev. But if the match develops like the one in New York City in 2023, then Dimitrov’s strength should also be enough. And then maybe even the second win against Zverev would be possible – almost nine years after the first and only one.
