Fluminense’s new winger Aleksandra Uzelac became European runner-up this Sunday (03/09). Undefeated until the final, the Serbian team ended up surpassed by Turkey in the tie-break (27/25, 21/25, 25/22, 22/25 and 13/15), in Belgium, one of the hosts of the competition, in addition to Italy , Germany and Estonia.
Uzelac was on the court in seven of the nine matches played by the team commanded by Giovanni Guidetti and added 41 points throughout the competition. Accomplished, the Serbian spoke about the feeling with winning the silver medal.
“The feeling is incredible. I’m very pleased and happy for having had the opportunity to play and show my volleyball. I’ll keep working, I’ll have more opportunities and I want to keep taking advantage”, said Uzelac.
In the qualifying stage, Serbia beat all opponents in their group (A), which included Ukraine, Slovenia, Poland, Hungary and Belgium. In the round of 16, the triumph by 3 sets to 0 against Sweden (25/17, 25/13 and 25/16) guaranteed the team in the quarterfinals, in which it beat the Czech Republic by 3 sets to 1 (24/26, 25/17, 25/11 and 25/14). The place in the final was guaranteed with the victory by 3 sets to 1 over Holland (25/21, 15/25, 25/22 and 25/21). In the final, however, Serbia lost to Turkey by 3 sets to 2.
Before joining Fluminense, the winger continues with her selection for the pre-Olympic competition, seeking a spot for Paris 2024. The competition takes place between September 16th and 24th, in Japan, China and Poland. Serbia is in group A alongside China, Dominican Republic, Netherlands, Canada, Czech Republic, Mexico and Ukraine. The two best-placed teams in each group qualify for the Olympic Games. The remaining vacancies will be defined by the ranking of the International Volleyball Federation (FIBV) after the preliminary phase of the League of Nations 2024.
“Now the focus of our selection is the pre-Olympics. We have high expectations”, concluded the tricolor.
