Agri-food exports grow 5.6% in the first seven months of the year – El Sol de México

From January to July, the agri-food, agricultural and agro-industrial trade balance registered a surplus of 5,793 million dollars, 672 million dollars higher than the same period in 2022. Its value, which was 31,487 million dollars, is the highest in 31 years.

The Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development, Víctor Villalobos, reported that the country stands out in the first three places worldwide in production of avocado, tomato, berries, walnuts, lemon, mango, peppers, lettuce, asparagus and onion. And he announced that it will soon be in papaya and pineapple.

He stressed that the country’s agri-food exports increased 5.16 percent in the January-July period, adding up to 31,487 million dollars. That represents the highest value reported in 31 years.

The exports that grew the most in the first seven months of 2023 were soybean oil with 115.4 percent; live cattle, 57.17 percent; cocoa butter, fat and oil, 55.5 percent; sorghum 48.7 percent and coffee, tea or yerba mate preparations, 40.87 percent.

Foreign sales of fresh or dried grapes also increased, 35.38 percent; pasta, 32.3 percent; yeast, 31.0 percent; concentrated milk with or without sugar, 26.3; vegetables prepared in vinegar, 23.6 percent; cucumber and gherkin, 22.5 percent and fresh or refrigerated cabbages, 22.01 percent.

Meanwhile, the sales with the greatest economic value were those of beer with 3,531 million dollars; tequila and mezcal, 2,765 million dollars; avocado, 1,722 million dollars; tomato, 1,672 million dollars; bakery products, 1,486 million dollars and strawberries and raspberries, 1,316 million dollars.

By groups, beverages, vegetables and fruits were the main export products. They concentrated 61 percent, with a participation of 23, 20 and 18 percent each.

The head of Sader said that the growth in exports is the result of the work of the producers and the health prestige of Mexican foods. And also the promotion of public goods such as the National Agri-Food Health, Safety and Quality Service (Senasica).

And to the above is added the opening of new export markets, without neglecting the domestic market.

Regarding imports, Sader reports that they totaled 25,694 million dollars in the first seven months of this year. With this, the country’s agri-food balance registers a surplus for the ninth consecutive year as of July 2023 for 5,793 million dollars.

In the same period, the agricultural and fishing balance had a positive balance of 1,078 million dollars, greater by 11.79 percent, which boosted exports by 13,651 million dollars.

The agroindustrial trade balance presented a surplus of 4,715 million dollars, 13.43 percent higher than the first seven months of 2022 with exports of 17,836 million dollars, this is an increase of 6.72 percent compared to the reference period.
