A Life on the Edge: The Inspiring Journey of Fernando González Cruz

Nobody could imagine that among those mountains, in a suburb of the Canary Islands belonging to the municipality of Telde, an illiterate teenager with a passion for combat sports would star years later in one of those stories of sacrifice that make the mortals of this earth vibrate.

The daily battle for survival with his nine siblings and the education he received from parents who never let poverty devour human values, forged the boy’s personality and provided him with the necessary tools to conquer the world.

When I met him he was already 52 years old, he had specialized in martial arts, he had more than 40 sports and three academic titles, he had a lifetime international passport and he was a great businessman.

Due to those coincidences of life, while I was interviewing a Cuban former world boxing champion – who at that time served as his coach – I made friends with this canary, and when he opened the log of his life to me, I was shocked.

That young man who began training at the age of 16 at the Telder Judo Club Gym and who learned the first letters of the alphabet while doing his military service, was creating small businesses with his innate cunning, and Before turning 30 he received the European master’s degree for the youngest Great Businessman.

One day, he put some clothes in a bag, took some money that he had managed to save over time, kissed the old people and went out to travel the planet to test his skills gained in martial arts and boxing.

On that journey he traveled through part of Europe, Asia, the northern part of Africa and the United States, where he was nourished by the different cultures that formed his character.

My friend Fernando mastered 39 artistic and sports disciplinesamong which the different skills achieved in the Bujinkan schools (Ninjutsu and Bujutsu) stand out, ancient martial lineages that develop the techniques and tactics used by Ninjas in the art of war.

He also obtained several degrees in Jiu-Jitsu (art based on unarmed defense), Shorinji Kempo, Muay Thai (Thai boxing), and is a sports instructor in Kempo Da (fist method).

I don’t know if the interview I did with him in those days helped visualize the story of this humble country man, who shaped his life in silence through sacrifice and perseverance.

The truth is that the graduate in Geography and History, Luz Marina Delgado, at the proposal of the official chronicler of the city of Telde, Antonio María González, He presented his biography this Thursday A life on the edgewhich I see as a reward for those who never hand over flags and overcome themselves in the midst of stormy scenarios.

My friend Fernando González Cruzthe same one who one day dreamed of learning self-defense techniques while carrying stones and sacks of potatoes to survive, gave everyone a life lesson.

He never let himself be overcome by ignorance and While practicing his sports activities, he founded several successful companies, Among which stands out an equestrian stable of racehorses, competitive at a national and international level.

Starting this week, Telde’s illustrious son and candidate for the Sports Merit Medal, achieves another of his dreams by seeing his story captured on paper, a kind of map for new generations to follow the route that will take them to their full potential. fulfillment as human beings and athletes.

“We are all strong, we all can, we just need to be brave and not make excuses to overcome life’s obstacles. If someone else could, we can too, that is the mentality.

“You need to fight and have perseverance and not let yourself be overcome by shortcomings, which are what make us grow and strengthen,” he declared exclusively for Havana Tribune.

The first thing an athlete must have to succeed is humility, simplicity and transparency.. He must be loyal and very serious in his training, in order to create a structure of respect for his coaches and opponents. That is where concentration, discipline and the personal enrichment of each person is born,” he concluded.
