30 Nominees Announced for the 2023 Women’s Ballon d’Or, Debinha Represents Brazil

In addition to the nominees for the best player in the world award, France Football magazine also announced this Wednesday (6) the 30 nominees for the Women’s Ballon d’Or for the 2022/23 season. Current two-time champion of the trophy, Spanish Alexia Putellas was left out of the list, which includes striker Debinha as the only representative from Brazil.

Putellas tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in July last year and only played in Barcelona’s last six games of the 2022/23 season, all coming off the bench. The star even started when Spain won the World Cup in August, but had one assist and no goals in seven games in the tournament.

The big favorite to be the new Ballon d’Or champion is fellow Spaniard Aitana Bonmatí, who had a perfect year. The midfielder won and was named the best player in the World Cup and Champions League, won by Barcelona. With the club, she also won the Spanish Championship and the Spanish Super Cup. In total, there were 21 goals and 23 assists in 45 matches this season.

Spain and Barcelona dominated the list of nominees. Six Spanish players are competing for the award, four of which play for Barça (Aitana Bonmatí, Patrícia Guijarro, Mapi Leão, Salma Paralluelo). Nigerian Asisat Oshoala and Swedish Fridolina Rolfo are the only players of other nationalities at the Catalan club who are competing for the trophy.

The only Brazilian nominated, striker Debinha was remembered for the 23 goals and five assists she added in 36 matches between August 2022 and August 2023. In the World Cup held in Australia and Zone Zealand, she found the net once and scored a assistance in three games, but was unable to prevent Brazil’s early elimination in the group stage.

Criteria and regulations for the Women’s Ballon d’Or

The Ballon d’Or is an annual trophy organized by France Football magazine since 2018. The period analyzed for the award is from August 2022 to August 2023. All competitions held during the period are taken into consideration, including those contested by national teams.

The three main criteria used to award the Ballon d’Or are: individual performance and decisive and impressive character; collective presentations and awards; class and fair play. The award judges are 50 journalists, one from each country in the top 50 of the latest FIFA women’s national team ranking.

Each juror nominates five players in descending order of merit from a list of 30 players drawn up by France Football, members of the editorial staff of the French newspaper L’Équipe and, in this edition, former striker Didier Drogba, Ballon d’Or ambassador.

Those nominated by journalists receive six, four, three, two and one points respectively. The player who scores the most points wins the Ballon d’Or. The tiebreaker criteria are the number of nominations for first place, followed by the number of times cited for second and third place. The awards ceremony will be held on October 30th.
