Hertha BSC has continued its upward trend in the 2nd Bundesliga – and in a dramatic way. With the 3:2 (2:0) win at Holstein Kiel, the Berliners got their first away win of the season and climbed into the middle of the table on the seventh matchday.

Smail Prevljak (27th minute) and Andreas Bouchalakis (39th) gave Hertha the lead in the first half. Kiel equalized through Benedikt Pichler (54th) and Steven Skrzybski (57th). But of all people, ex-Kiel player Fabian Reese (90+2) scored Berlin’s winning goal with a penalty kick. Shortly before, Kiel’s goalkeeper Timon Weiner (88th) had saved a first penalty from Haris Tabakovic. Kiel’s Marvin Schulz saw yellow and red in long added time.

Coach Pal Dardai’s team lost all of their first three away games of the season. With nine points, the Berliners have moved into the top third of the table and can confidently go into the upcoming game against FC St. Pauli next Saturday (8.30 p.m./Sky and Sport 1) in the Olympic Stadium.

In Kiel, Dardai relied on a courageous style of play. Reese continued his recent good performances and served top striker Tabakovic (10th) for his first good chance. After another Reese cross, Prevljak was successful with a header. When the Bosnian international shot from distance, Bouchalakis used the rebound to score Berlin’s second goal.

Hertha was on course for victory, but Kiel came back impressively. In the end, Hertha had the better end, even if Tabakovic and Derry Scherhant missed their best chances for a fourth goal in the hectic stoppage time.

Kaiserslautern establishes itself at the top

In front of over 40,000 spectators in the Fritz Walter Stadium, 1. FC Kaiserslautern continued their winning streak. The team defeated Hansa Rostock 3:1 (2:1) and is now unbeaten in six competitive games. This meant that coach Dirk Schuster’s team improved to fourth place in the table.

The 2-1 half-time score thanks to goals from Tobias Raschl (3rd minute) and Kevin Kraus (17th) and Junior Brumado on the Rostock side (29th) was extremely flattering for the guests from the Baltic Sea. Kaiserslautern had a very strong performance, but missed numerous good scoring opportunities in front of 40,450 fans.

After the restart, Rostock was able to make the game noticeably more open. The Palatinate team now had to do a lot more defensive work. Juan Perea, the Colombian loanee from VfB Stuttgart, missed the best opportunities to equalize in the 68th and 76th minutes. On the other side, Daniel Hanslik and Jan Elvedi were unable to capitalize on a double chance (82′). But a minute later, FCK striker Ragnar Ache made it 3-1 with his sixth goal of the season.

Draw in the top game

Hannover 96, on the other hand, narrowly missed out on top of the table. Despite a strong performance and an early lead, the Lower Saxony team only played 1-1 (1-0) in the top game on Sunday against leaders Fortuna Düsseldorf. If they had won, Stefan Leitl’s team would have jumped to first place.

In front of 35,444 spectators in the Düsseldorf Arena, Cedric Teuchert (7th) scored the goal to make it 1-0 for Hannover in the early stages. The Greek newcomer Christos Tzolis saved Fortuna’s lead in the table when he scored with a penalty kick in the 58th minute to make it 1-1. The Rhinelanders will now travel to the next top game at Hamburger SV on Friday, one point ahead of the competition.

A week after the 7-0 win against VfL Osnabrück, the 96ers continued their strong form. Teuchert scored his seventh goal of the season. The 26-year-old missed a great chance shortly before half-time when he was denied by Düsseldorf’s good goalkeeper Florian Kastenmeier.
