In terms of sport, things aren’t going as planned at 1. FC Köln at the moment, but there was good news from another side: Effzeh is no longer a case for renovation.

On Wednesday, the management of 1. FC Köln had some good news with them. Managing director Philipp Türoff presented the business figures – and they were definitely positive. With sales of 172.2 million euros and a profit of 12.4 million euros after taxes for the 2022/23 season, the financial situation at 1. FC Köln GmbH & Co. KGaA has clearly improved compared to the previous year.

Two special effects contributed to the good result: a transfer surplus and additional income from participation in the Europa Conference League. “We had a strong year with a good result, especially thanks to special effects,” Türoff explicitly pointed out in his speech at the general meeting on Wednesday. The European Cup generated around 13 million euros in sales, while the sales of Anthony Modeste and Salih Özcan to Borussia Dortmund brought around ten million euros into the coffers. “That puts the strong result into perspective,” says Türoff, “because it cannot be repeated at will.”

With great discipline we have come closer to our goal.

It is also positive that liabilities fell from around 66 to 50.5 million euros and equity increased from just 3.6 million euros to an impressive 15.7 million euros. “With great discipline, we have come closer to our goal of setting up the FC’s cost structures in such a way that positive business results can be achieved in the future even without special effects,” said Türoff, who had described the Effzeh as a “restructuring case” last year. This is also why the 47-year-old emphasized the need to consistently continue on the path currently taken, “in order to let the FC grow on a permanently stable foundation. We are not there yet.”

The 1st Football Club Cologne 01/07 eV was also in good economic shape – it had a surplus of 251,000 euros for 2022/23 as of June 30, 2023. In this context, Türoff emphasized that “the association is economically stable and capable of acting. It is supported by more than 130,000 members and can confidently exercise its role in society as a whole.”

However, the figures presented are only a preliminary result, as the annual financial statements will not be finalized until the end of October. The team also has time until then to improve on their messed up start to the season with just one point from five games.
