Young star Rune fails in the first round

Fourth in the world rankings Holger Rune failed in the first round at the US Open in New York. The young Danish star lost to Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena on Monday 3:6 6:4 3:6 2:6.

During the game he had his left thigh treated in the third set. The 20-year-old had recently reached the quarter-finals at the French Open and Wimbledon. However, he has not won a match since the grass classic in mid-July.

Rune had mockingly commented on the schedule for the game against Carballes Baena away from the big stadiums in New York. Taking to Twitter (X), he posted a map of the facility and wrote, “If you can find Court 5, that’s where I’m going to play my first match on Monday.”

Ruud is fully challenged at the start

Norway’s Casper Ruud, seeded number five, also struggled hard. The 24-year-old defeated the American Emilio Nava after 3:17 hours 7:6 (7/5) 3:6 6:4 7:6 (7/5). The next opponent of the fifth in the world rankings is the Chinese Zhang Zhizhen, who defeated local hero Jeffrey John Wolf 7:5 7:5 6:7 (5/7) 4:6 6:3.

The first top player also failed in the women’s competition. The Greek world number one Maria Sakkari lost against Rebeka Masarova from Spain 4:6 4:6. It was the third first-round loss for Sakkari in a Grand Slam tournament in a row. Defending champion Iga Swiatek moved into the second round in a hurry. The 22-year-old Pole didn’t give Swede Rebecca Peterson a chance at 6:0 6:1.
