World Championships in Athletics Ticker: Discus world champion Tausaga thinks of fire victims in Hawaii

At the moment of her sporting moment of glory, the new discus world champion Lalauuga Tausaga commemorated the victims of the devastating fire in Hawaii. After her sensational victory at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Tausaga, who was born on the island of Oahu, reported that she constantly prays for those affected. “People from the Pacific Islands stick together,” said the 25-year-old, who moved to San Diego, California from Hawaii at the age of seven and also has Samoan roots.

With a magic throw to 69.49 meters, Tausaga increased her previous best distance by more than four meters on Tuesday evening in the fifth attempt and passed the favorite Olympic champion Valarie Allman. The US teammate had just thrown 69.23 meters and looked like the winner.

Winner Tausaga dedicated the gold medal to her mother, who encouraged her to take up sport. She disliked volleyball and basketball, then Tausaga tried shot put. That got her a place in college. She went to the Midwest in the US state of Iowa. “It was time to get stuck in a blizzard,” Tausaga explained her choice. In Iowa she switched to the discus throw, now she is the first world champion from the USA in this discipline in her third participation in the World Championships.

Sprinter Hartmann already eliminated

The new German 200-meter record holder Joshua Hartmann was eliminated at the World Championships in Athletics. The German champions did not get past fourth place in the heat in a disappointing 20.51 seconds.

Third place would have been necessary to advance automatically to the semi-finals. There are also three more places for the other fastest riders. Hartmann was not one of those after his race.

At the German Championships in Kassel in July, the 24-year-old from Cologne set a German record of 20.02 seconds. Hartmann could have been the first German sprinter to undercut the 20-second mark if he hadn’t celebrated a little before crossing the finish line.

On the fourth day of competition, the Germans remain without a medal

Tobias Potye flew high, but not high enough, the discus sailed too short for the German women – the German quartet missed the first medal at the World Championships in Athletics and the hoped-for boost for the second half of the World Championships. Potye ended up fifth in the high jump on Tuesday in Budapest despite a strong performance with 2.33 meters, as did Kristin Pudenz in sixth place in the discus throw.

The Olympic silver medalist from Potsdam jumped 65.96 meters, Shanice Craft was seventh with 65.47 meters and Claudine Vita tenth with 63.19 meters. Surprisingly, Lalauuga Tausaga from the USA secured the title with 69.49 meters ahead of Olympic champion and teammate Valarie Allman (69.23) and last year’s winner Feng Bin from China (68.20).

Only a few meters apart, the discus trio and Potye gave their all for the precious metal they were hoping for. The runner-up at the European Championship made a failed attempt at 2.25 meters, the 28-year-old then safely took the 2.29 meters and was thus at the front of the competition. When he surpassed 2.33 meters on the second attempt, he brought back memories of July, when he had improved his personal best by four centimeters to 2.34 meters in Chorzow. 2.36 meters was then too high, because of the previous failed attempt he was denied the jump onto the podium. Italy’s Gianmarco Tamberi won with a world best of 2.36m for the year ahead of American JuVaughn Harrison, who jumped the same height but required more attempts. Olympic champion Mutaz Essa Barshim from Qatar was third. Like Potye, he crossed 2.33 meters.

World record holder Kipyegon again world champion

Faith Kipyegon is again world champion over 1500 meters. The 29-year-old Kenyan, who recently set three world records in seven weeks, won in 3:54.87 minutes. Second was Ethiopia’s Diribe Welteji, who finished in 3:55.69 minutes.

For the two-time Olympic champion Kipyegon it was the third world title after 2017 and 2022. In 2015 and 2019 she had won silver. The winner in 2019 was Sifan Hassan from the Netherlands, who had an unfortunate fall in Budapest in the finish sprint over 10,000. She was third in the 1500 meters.

The heat requires a program change

The great heat in Budapest has led to a program change. As the world association announced on Tuesday, the women’s heats over 5000 meters were moved from morning to evening this Wednesday. After a storm at the start last Saturday, temperatures in Budapest have risen to over 30 degrees every day since then.

In the second half of the World Cup, some endurance competitions are planned. On Thursday, the walkers will compete over 35 kilometers. The women’s marathon is scheduled for Saturday, followed by the men’s marathon on Sunday. The starting time is 7:00 a.m. Then the temperatures are only about 20 degrees, but the humidity is currently always very high.

Julian Weber euphoric

European javelin champion Julian Weber can hardly wait to start at the World Championships in Athletics in Budapest. The man from Mainz arrived in the Hungarian capital on Monday, where he has to compete in qualifying on Friday. The final then takes place at the end of the title fights on Sunday evening. “I’m glad when I finally feel the vibes. When I see how many spectators are in the stadium in the morning, I would like to start now,” Weber told the VRM media (Tuesday edition).

The 28-year-old is one of the German team’s few candidates for a medal at the World Championships. Last year he just missed out on a medal in fourth place in Eugene and was very disappointed about it. “I want to give everything, I’m the second best in the world and I want to confirm that. It would be nice to take home a medal,” said Weber.

Lückenkemper Friday back at the start

After another World Cup disappointment over 100 meters, Gina Lückenkemper quickly targeted the relay. “After the individual went the way it went, for me it’s ‘now more than ever’ in the relay,” said Germany’s “Sportswoman of the Year”. With the quartet, the heats are scheduled for Friday.

The glittering individual final on Monday evening with the winner Sha’Carri Richardson from the USA had to be followed by double European champion Lückenkemper as a spectator at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest. The 23-year-old American won in 10.65 seconds ahead of Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson and defending champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Price, also from Jamaica.

Richardson WINS at premiere

Sha’Carri Richardson has been crowned the new 100 meter champion at the World Athletics Championships. The American won in Budapest on Monday in 10.65 seconds. Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson took silver in 10.72 seconds. Defending champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Price from Jamaica, who has already been world champion five times, secured bronze in 10.77 seconds. European champion Gina Lückenkemper from Germany had clearly missed the intended entry into her first World Cup final.

For Richardson it was the first title at the first World Cup. The 23-year-old failed to qualify for the World Cup last year. At the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo, she had to watch blocked. A doping test revealed marijuana use, which is why it was banned. Richardson explained this as dealing with the pressure and strain of her mother’s death.

Im triple jump 18-year-old favorite Jaydon Hibbert suffered a minor injury on his first attempt and dropped out of the competition. Hugues Fabrice Zango from Burkina Faso won with 17.64 meters ahead of Cubans Lázaro Martínez (17.41) and Cristian Nápoles (17.40).

Over 110 meter hurdles American Grant Holloway won the title for the third time. Holloway won in a season best of 12.96 seconds ahead of Jamaican Hansle Parchment, who was 11/100ths slower. Daniel Roberts from the USA was third.

The current medal table on Monday evening

1. USA 5 (Gold) 2 (Silver) 2 (Bronze) 2. Spain 2 0 0 3. Ethiopia 1 1 2 4. Great Britain 1 1 1 5. Sweden 1 1 0 6. Burkina Faso 1 0 0

Discus thrower Janssen eighth in the World Cup – Swede Stahl wins the final thriller

The German champion Henrik Janssen took eighth place in a gripping discus final at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest. The 25-year-old threw 63.80 meters in his best attempt on Monday. As expected, Janssen was not able to put the favorites for the medals under pressure. As at the 2019 World Cup, Swede Daniel Stahl won the title.

After the Olympic champion had been pushed out of the lead by defending champion Kristjan Ceh from Slovenia in the last round, he struck back impressively. He won with the world championship record of 71.46 meters ahead of Ceh, who threw the discus to 70.02 meters. European champion Mykolas Alekna, the 20-year-old son of Lithuania’s discus legend Virgilijus Alekna, finished third with 68.85 meters.
