Wolfsburg Break Transfer Record to Sign Lovro Majer from FC Stade Rennes

VfL Wolfsburg gets their dream player Lovro Majer (25) from FC Stade Rennes, but they have to dig deep into their pockets for it. According to information from the sports newspaper “L’Équipe”, the clubs have agreed on a transfer fee of 30 million plus 5 million euros in bonus payments. That is the highest sum that the “Wolves” have taken in their hands since Julian Draxler (29, PSG) signed from Schalke in the summer of 2015 – including bonuses, the second highest in the club’s history.

The Croatian midfielder and World Cup participant is expected in Wolfsburg on Tuesday to complete the medical check. Once he has signed the contract he will be the seventh signing of the summer and Wolfsburg’s transfer spending will rise to €76.5m. Two weeks ago it looked like Rennes would drop out of the negotiations and VfL coach Niko Kovac would not get his compatriot.

“They responded to the offer that they wouldn’t sell him because the coach didn’t want it,” adviser Andy Bara told the Croatian newspaper Sportske novosti at the time. Today we know that this maneuver was part of the club’s transfer game in order to boost the then offer of 20 million euros – VfL followed up and won the contract. “The Bundesliga would be perfect for him, I am convinced that he would continue to make progress under Kovac and that he would have made the breakthrough and his next transfer would be for 50 million euros or more to one of the biggest clubs,” Bara said in early August.

The fact that Majer will change for up to 35 million euros is partly due to Rennes, which is known for its intransigence when it comes to transfer poker. And the fact that Wolfsburg took in 70 million euros with the sales of Micky van de Ven (22, Tottenham) and Felix Nmecha (22), and that was also known in Brittany.

Previously, Rennes received €27m from Chelsea for homegrown Lesley Ugochukwu (19), who had strong performances in midfield alongside Majer. As a substitute, Nemanja Matic (35), who comes from AS Roma, brought in concentrated experience for a transfer fee of EUR 2 million. Majer leaves Rennes, who took him from Dinamo Zagreb for €12m, after two years and 79 games.
