At the end of July, a completely new indoor floor was tested at the women’s U19 World Cup. For the first time, the game wasn’t played on wooden parquet, but on a high-tech video sports floor made of glass. Planned and manufactured by the German company ASB from Stein (Bavaria).

The floor can use an app to display scores. Or the flags of the teams. Or the name of the successful thrower. The LED floor can also be used in training and for advertising.
The reactions of players and officials were positive. One reason why the BBL is also considering playing on the indoor floor of the future.
This is already possible in the next season (from September 27). League managing director Stefan Holz (57) to SPORT BILD: “I know this surface well. We have already dealt with it and included in the regulations last year that league games can take place on it. I believe that we will see that.”
But when? Open!
Specifically, two hall operators from the BBL are currently dealing with the floor. But there are hurdles. In addition to the costs, some arenas would also have to be rebuilt. SPORT BILD found out: A hall whose operators are considering the LED floor would have to be dug deeper. And the first row of seating would be eliminated.
Holz: “Of course it would be great if we were the first league in the world to play on it. But the ball is in the hands of the clubs and the operators of the hall.”
And what does the manufacturer say? Christof Babinsky, Managing Director of the manufacturing company: “First talks with the BBL Managing Director, Dr. wood, have already taken place. ASB GlassFloor had already given him concrete suggestions as to what cooperation with the BBL could look like. We are ready to equip the first arcades with our full LED floor in the near future. And maybe the BBL is the ‘first mover'”.
