The ‘shoot out’ were some peculiar penalties that were copied from the NHL

MLS was created in 1996 and this system of maximum penalties lasted until 1999.

Major League Soccer has evolved a lot since its creation in 1996. The newly created competition adapted a system to prevent matches from ending in a draw, copied from ice hockey. It was the ‘shoot out’, where the coach selected five players to overcome the opposing goalkeeper. The players started from a distance of 32 meters and had a time of five seconds to carry out the action.

This system lasted until 1999. The MLS decided to eliminate the format and gave its approval to the ties during the regular season. The classic penalties were reserved for the playoffs as a tiebreaker.

This peculiar way of executing maximum penalties was never successful, since the goalkeepers were almost always the winners in heads-up matches. The ‘shoot out’ did not catch on with the fans either and that is why it ended up being withdrawn.

La Kings League

The ‘MLS penalties’ have returned to the order of the day thanks to the Kings League of Gerard Piqué and Ibai Llanos. In the streamers league, one of the tie-breaking tools, as well as a card that presidents can use, is to have an ‘MLS penalty’, adopting this peculiar form of a 1 on 1 between goalkeeper and striker, although this time , adapted to the 7-a-side soccer field where the competition is played.

After the success in Spain, the MLS has already ‘threatened’ several times to resume this form of tiebreakeralthough it would only be in exhibition matches such as the All Stars of the league, since it is not a method approved by FIFA.
