As Bayern manager and president, Uli Hoeneß once lamented the huge sums that were made available for transfers. 100 million euros for a player is too bad for him, said the 71-year-old. And then this summer comes Harry Kane. Hoeneß is now being reminded of his statements by the Werder fans.

“I don’t want to buy a player for 100 million euros, even if I had them. The money is too bad for me,” Uli Hoeneß told “Sport Bild” in January 2019. The then President of FC Bayern Munich reacted to the million transfers from Neymar (at that time to Paris Saint-Germain for 222 million euros) and Ousmane Dembélé (for 105 million euros to FC Barcelona). “I think no player in the world is worth 100 million euros,” he said at the time. And about four and a half years later he was there, the 100 million euro transfer from FC Bayern – in the person of Harry Kane.

The fans of SV Werder Bremen reminded the current member of the supervisory board of the record champions of his statements from back then with a poster during the 4-0 Bayern victory in the Weser Stadium. Hoeneß himself had intervened in the course of the transfer saga about the Englishman and his statements significantly worsened the negotiating position of his Bavarians.

Hoeneß emphasized in mid-July that Kane had clearly signaled in all discussions that his decision to switch to Bayern Munich was in place. “And if she stays, then we’ll get him,” said the honorary president. “Then Tottenham will have to buckle.”

Tottenham boss Daniel Levy, on the other hand, praised Hoeneß as “clever” and a savvy professional. “First we have to get him to call a number. He’s playing for time,” said Hoeneß. And time was playing for Spurs when it came to price. They got what they wanted – a fee of more than 100 million euros for a player with a year remaining in the contract with the Premier League club.

Kane indicated in his first Bundesliga game against Bremen that the transfer can ultimately be worthwhile for Bayern despite the record sum and that the Briton is worth his money. He contributed a goal and an assist.
