In the first round of the DFB Cup, VfL lost 6-3 to third-division side Arminia Bielefeld after a penalty shoot-out. Just like with league competitor Werder Bremen (2:3 at Viktoria Köln), the first game of the new season goes straight into the pants…
Although Zoller heaved VfL into extra time with his goal to make it 2-2 in added time in the second half (90+1), nothing happened – penalty shoot-out!
And here Arminia prevails! Hofmann and Stöger shoot up. The Alm is shaking, Bochum out!
From the start, the DSC has more grip and wins more duels. Bochum can’t do anything with their own possession of the ball in heavy rain and deep ground – quite typical for the cup. Instead, Bielefeld countered – and how:

Bielefeld after a long time with a sense of achievement
Conclusion: For a long time at Bochum, only the almost 5,000 fans who traveled with them shone in the stands (all came in white and ensured a monochromatic guest curve). There is a lot of room for improvement on the pitch.
In Bielefeld, the completely new squad made a really good impression for the first time after two rather weak performances in Dresden (1:3) and in the Westphalian Cup against district league team Herringhausen/Eickum (2:0). After a long time, such a game is once again balm for the DSC soul battered by the double relegation.
