Vanhaezebrouck ‘targets’ Westerlo: “That sounds crazy, doesn’t it”

AA Gent wants to continue its perfect start of the season against KVC Westerlo. De Kemphanen know a very spicy summer mercato and somewhere that is bothering Hein Vanhaezebrouck. AA Gent’s trainer managed to subtly sneer at the Kemphanen, where they suddenly have a lot of financial resources thanks to the Turkish owners.

Stevige market

“We spent five million and sold twelve million. Westerlo spent 13.5 million but sold nothing. If we end up spending more than them, it will probably be because we will have a positive balance sheet in the end. They will probably end up with negative balance,” he said.

Vanhaezebrouck does forget that Westerlo sold Lyle Foster to Burnley for 11 million euros in January and Halil Akbunar to Eyupspor for 1.2 million euros. With regard to transfer funds that are spent, there is therefore still some balance in 2023, which is not the case for wages. The coach does have a point that the fight is ‘unfair’.

“Supporters can say that we can go very far if we keep everyone on board, but there are also rules and they spend 130 percent or 170 percent of their budget that they spend on wages. That sounds crazy in itself, doesn’t it. At Ghent that is 50 percent, at the others an average of 70 percent. Westerlo puts a lot of effort into belonging at the top.” AA Gent is certainly not going to do crazy business after the arrival of Sam Baro as the new owner. The Buffalos will continue to strengthen themselves.
