US Open, Tag 3 Roundup: Wozniacki jubelt im Arthur Ashe

Caroline Wozniacki causes a stir when she returns to the big stage. Novak Djokovic is losing top challengers in his half of the tournament.

Caroline Wozniacki looked up into her box at husband David Lee and beamed. “There couldn’t be anything better than playing here in the packed Arthur Ashe Stadium,” said the former world number one from Denmark, who shook up the elite on her comeback: “A dream comes true.” For last year’s finalists Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas, however, hopes have burst.

Wozniacki causes a stir with her Grand Slam comeback. The 33-year-old Dane prevailed in a duel between two major winners in the second round of the US Open 7: 5, 7: 6 (7: 5) against Petra Kvitova and almost plays as if she had never been away.

The 2018 Australian Open winner only celebrated her comeback on the tour at the beginning of August after a break of more than three and a half years from competition, she had taken a break to start a family. A finalist at Flushing Meadows in 2009 and 2014, she now meets USA’s Jennifer Brady – another returnee long held back by injury problems.

There were no other major surprises in the women’s competition. Coco Gauff defeated the Russian tennis prodigy Mirra Andreeva, who was three years younger, 6: 3, 6: 2 at the start of the third day of the tournament. The French Open winner and defending champion Iga Swiatek did not show any weakness either. The world number one from Poland defeated Daria Saville from Australia, who is only 322nd in the WTA ranking, 6:3, 6:4.

US Open: Rune and Tsitsipas fail

Novak Djokovic, on the other hand, runs out of top challengers in his half of the tournament. After the Dane Holger Rune already said goodbye in the first round, the Norwegian Ruud and the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas followed completely surprisingly.

Ruud lost to the Chinese Zhang Zhizhen 4-6, 7-5, 2-6, 6-0, 2-6. Zhang, number 67 in the world, became the first player in his country to win against a top five professional. Ruud enraged his opponent when his opponent took a long break in the toilet – which noticeably cost him his momentum after the fourth set.

The Swiss Dominic Stricker had already caused the first big surprise and the world number seven Tsitsipas from Greece in an exciting marathon match 7: 5, 6: 7 (2: 7), 6: 7 (5: 7), 7: 6 (8:6), 6:3 defeated. The Austrian Dominic Thiem experienced renewed drama, who broke off his duel against Ben Shelton from the USA after the 6: 7 (1: 7) in the first set due to stomach problems.
