Uruguay said goodbye to the Olympic Prequalifier, losing to the Bahamas 78-62

The Uruguayan basketball team closed its performance in the Olympic Pre-qualifying tournament that is taking place in Santiago del Estero, and which will grant a place to the champion to play the Pre-Olympic next year towards Paris 2024.

In the semifinal game, the light blues fell 62-78 with Bahamas, a rival that has three players who are active in the NBA: DeAndre Ayton, Eric Gordon and Buddy Hield. They did not even have to push themselves to achieve a victory at half speed.

Gerardo Jauri’s team was not even one second up on the scoreboard, which after six minutes already marked a difference of 10 for the islanders. Uruguay couldn’t even be competitive and barely made a reaction at the close of the first boy (12-23).

Second half: bag and reaction

The second period ended 23-43. The Bahamians slowly increased the difference, still rotating their squad and dosing efforts, with their sights set on Sunday’s final against Argentina. The locals defeated Chile 87-79.

Uruguay was down 28 in the third game, which finished 34-59, and reduced the difference in the last game to 11 (57-68) four minutes from the epilogue. Some headlines returned and the island team stopped the celestial reaction.

Gonzalo Iglesias, who contributed six triples out of a total of nine shots, was the Uruguayan scorer with 20 points in 19:13 minutes played. He was followed by Bernardo Barrera with nine. For the winner, Buddy Hield, guard of the Indiana Pacers, stood out with 17.

Uruguay, which had the important absences of Bruno Fitipaldo, Jayson Granger, Luciano Parodi, Agustín Ubal and Santiago Véscovi, who were joined by Ignacio Xavier and Mauricio Arregui due to injury during preparation, said goodbye with three defeats in four games.

In their debut, the light blues defeated Colombia 80-65, a difference that allowed them to qualify for the semifinals even after losing 78-70 to Chile and 69-65 to the Virgin Islands.
