Under the Radar: Daniil Medvedev’s Quiet Quest for Success at the 2023 US Open

Daniil Medvedev (ATP No. 3) is a bit under the radar at the 2023 US Open. It doesn’t matter to him – he still hopes that something will change.

In general, Daniil Medvedev cannot be accused of a lack of discussion value at the US Open. In 2019, in his breakthrough year, “Meddy” also fought his way to the final at the US Open, in which he lost to Rafael Nadal in five dramatic sets. Along the way, he did just about anything to antagonize the audience – including asking them to keep booing him, as that only made him stronger.

Medvedev won his first (and so far only) Grand Slam title in New York in 2021.

Medvedev wants to give the spoilsport

Meddy and Flushing Meadows, so it fits so far, and on hard court the man from Russia is on his favorite terrain anyway. So can he also play for the title at the US Open 2023?

Probably – even if hardly anyone talks about him. The tennis world is still raving about the amazing Cincinnati final between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz, one of the best ATP matches ever. And also hopes that the two will face each other in the final of the US Open in two weeks.

“Honestly, I think it’s great,” said Medvedev ahead of the tournament about the conversation value between the two. “I think it’s great for the sport of tennis that we have these two guys playing against each other now.”

Still, he hopes that he or someone else can stop them.

Meddy with impressive hard court results – in the spring

With a similarly impressive series of hard court successes as in 2019 (finals in Washington, Toronto, victory in Cincy) or 2021 (victory in Toronto, semifinals in Cincy) he does not make it this time – in Toronto it was over in the quarterfinals, in Cincinnati already in round 3.

Medvedev had trumped in the spring, with four tournament successes (Rotterdam, Doha, Dubai, Miami) and a final (Indian Wells). There he lost quite clearly against Carlos Alcaraz. Who also most recently beat him in three sets at Wimbledon.

That there is a lot of talk about Alcaraz and Djokovic – “normal”, said Medvedev. “The goal is that we will talk about me after the US Open.”
