Tsitsipas Climbs to Top 4, Evans and Griekspoor Rise in Rankings

Tsitsipas finds the Top 4

Few of the top 10 players in the world were on the courts last week. But it was the case of Stefanos Tsitsipas who reaped the rewards. By going for his 10th title on the circuit in Los Cabos as well as 250 points, the Greek took over 4th place from Casper Ruud (5th) with 105 units of margin. In front of him, the leading trio of Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev remains unchanged and in that order.

The Americans Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe were also on the courts on the Washington side where they even had the status of seeds 1 and 2. But respectively eliminated in the semi-finals and quarter-finals, they still close the march of this Top 10 which therefore knows only one modification. To tell the truth, the status quo is even almost total among the top 20: respectively semi-finalist and finalist in Los Cabos, Borna Coric (15th) and Alex de Minaur (18th) gain only one rank at the expense of Alexander Zverev (16th ) and Lorenzo Musetti (19th).

Evans and Griekspoor target 20

They created the event in Washington. Daniel Evans and Tallon Griekspoor shared the poster for an unexpected final. For the first time titled in the ATP 500, the Briton thus obtains the best ranking of his career (21st, +9 places), which is also the case of his Dutch “victim”, now 26th (+11) in the ATP ranking. Griekspoor, who was only 95th at the start of the year, has been on the rise for several months thanks to his first two trophies on the circuit in Pune then ‘S-Hertogenbosch and thus discovers the Top 30.

Baez and Thiem pounce, Kyrgios loses footing

The best progressions of the week in the Top 100 are to the credit of the finalists of Kitzbühel. Crowned in Austria for the third time on the circuit and still on clay, Sebastian Baez has overtaken 30 of his colleagues to rejoin the 50 best players in the world (42nd). For Dominic Thiem, who tasted a final almost three years after his last (Masters 2020), the gain is much the same: he now displays the registration number 90 (+26).

The new ranking of the Austrian is certainly modest, but it allows him to get ahead of a certain… Nick Kyrgios. The Australian is thus paying dearly for his absence due to injury in Washington where he was defending champion. By shedding 500 points, or almost half of his capital, he plummeted 57 ranks to 92nd place in the world, his worst ranking since April 2022. With a match played (and lost) in 2023, this fall could not be avoided. He will also no longer be part of the Top 100 next week, since he will also not be able to defend his quarter-final from last year at the Masters 1000 of Canada. The seasons follow each other and are not alike for the Aussie who was in full swing at the same time last year.

Highs and lows

They are 6 to reach their best ranking in the Top 100 this Monday. Daniel Evans (21st, +8 places), Tallon Griekspoor (26th, +11), Arthur Fils (46th, +1), Pedro Cachin (48th, +6), Alexei Popyrin (56th, +1) and Yosuke Watanuki (94th , +5) can smile. For others, it’s grimace soup. Sebastian Korda (32nd, -6 places), Yoshihito Nishioka (45th, -14), Zhizhen Zhang (63rd, -10), Mikael Ymer (82nd, -26), Nick Kyrgios (92nd, -57), Radu Albot (108th , -11) and Maxime Cressy (112th, -16) lose big.
