Trans people will still be able to compete at the highest swimming level in the future. A separate “open category” will soon be created for this purpose.

In 2022, the International Swimming Federation World Aquatics banned trans people from participating in large-scale events such as the Olympic Games and World Cup races.

At the same time, it started a working group to set up an “open category”. That category will come into force for the first time from October, at the World Cup round in Berlin.

World Aquatics underlines that this demonstrates its “unwavering commitment to inclusion, which includes swimmers of all sexes and gender identities.”

The open category will include the 50m and 100m distances in all swim strokes, but World Aquatics clarifies that the distances can be expanded.
