Rio Olympic champion Laura Ludwig and Louisa Lippmann won bronze at the Beach Volleyball Championships in Vienna.
The duo won the game for third place against Anouk Verge-Depre/Joana Mäder from Switzerland 2:1 (21:14, 18:21, 15:11). Third place is the greatest success of the German team, which has only been playing together since November 2022.
Ludwig/Lippmann just missed the final. In the semifinals they lost to number one seeded Tanja Hüberli and Nina Brunner from Switzerland 1:2 (19:21, 21:19, 14:16). “Bronze seems a bit like gold,” said Lippmann after the game with a big smile on his face. Ludwig added: “I have goose bumps. We had tough weeks and months. I’m so proud.”
Ehlers and Wickler fail in the quarterfinals
The only German male duo represented in Vienna, Nils Ehlers and Clemens Wickler, also dropped out on Saturday. The team from Hamburg lost in the quarterfinals against the Swedes David Ahman and Jonatan Hellvig 1:2 (26:24, 17:21, 14:16).
